Animalia is an experimental/instrumental project I began a few months ago. After the release of my ep, I wanted to delve deeper into my home recordings and get a better understanding of my equipment and the process of mixing a larger collection of sounds. The name Animalia itself, defines all animals as being motile. They can move spontaneously and independently at some point in their lives. This is the concept behind this album. I wanted to move in a different direction with my music to challenge myself spontaneously and creatively.
There are a total of 8 tracks which are all synth-based with some occasional guitar segments in the background. The fourth track was inspired by a poem my niece wrote last year using those little white plastic refrigerator word magnets...
Play at the moon
Let it shine
Here, sky has beauty
Towards the end of the song, I recite the second line for her.
/// Always stay creative little Jaelah. You never know what might develop from a tiny, random piece of art. Let it shine. Thank you for inspiring me! xo
The last song is probably the most “different” track in the collection as I used my vocals as an instrument itself with layers that repeat themselves and others that I reversed and randomly slipped into the mix. It also features a wind chime that my dad gave me this past Christmas, a cello bow which I used on my electric guitar to get some moody undertones and also some recorded cicada noises to exit the album out with.
The cover art is a cyanotype sun print that I created on a square of cotton fabric using a Tosena Splendida cicada. I later added a starry overlay and enhanced the image to give it a thermographic (heat sensor) quality.
